The Cincinnati Directors Competition (CDC) is a competitive directing showcase presented by the New Edgecliff Theatre of Cincinnati. The CDC showcases the work of directors from around the country and is the only competition of its kind ever presented in this region. The Cincinnati Directors Competition evaluates work based on execution of material, not the material itself.
Every contestant will present a piece not exceeding 30 minutes in length. Each piece will be evaluated on execution of material - not on the material itself.
The winner of the Cincinnati Directors Competition will be selected using a system of voting that will include votes from a panel of judges as well as from the audience members. The judging panels will be comprised of three theatre professionals.
Each evening's winning performance will be determined by combining the votes from a panel of 3 theatre professionals with votes tallied from that evening's audience. Each judge and every audience member score each of the 3 shows in descending order: 3,2,1 (3 being the highest) They must give one of the shows a 1, one of the shows a 2 and one of the shows a 3. The winner for that evening is the show that receives the highest percentage of the best possible score (i.e. if there are 45 ballots cast, the highest possible score is 135 (3x45). In this case, if the audience score is 84, the percentage is 62.22%). The scores for each director will be the average of the panel and audience vote. So, if show A receives 62.22% of the audience vote and 54.8% of the panel vote, the final score for show A would be the average of those two, or 58.51%. The overall winner of the competition will be determined on the final night of competition when the top rated show from each previous evening will compete for audience votes. The show that gains the most votes that night will walk away with the grand prize. In the unlikely scenario of a tie between two winners, the tiebreaker will be judged by the previous evening's audience size, with the understanding that the show with a larger audience received more actual votes.
